Glencoe Folk Museum

Context
The accredited Museum premises are life-expired and do not meet modern standards of visitor access and collections care. Significant repair work is required for the Cat. B-listed historic buildings including re-roofing and sympathetic modification to permit wheelchair access. The present Museum is not financially sustainable and requires major investment to make it a thriving, appealing and financially secure attraction.

£2.2m funding has been raised to comprehensively overhaul and upgrade the museum site with significant contributions from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Museums Galleries Scotland, SSE and Highland Council, amongst others. The redeveloped Museum is to open in Spring 2026.

Aim
The aim of this commission is to provide clerk of works services to support the design team whilst the BUILDING repair and redevelopment and FITOUT contracts are on-site.

It is anticipated this role will occupy 30hrs per month, including 2 x site visits per week. A 7-month contract is anticipated.

Timetable 
Tender returns are expected no later than Fri 4th July.
Tender assessment will take place from Mon 7th July, with an anticipated start date of late July/August.

Budget
The budget available for this engagement is c£15,000 inc. VAT.

Reporting and Liaison 
The Clerk of Works will report to the lead project architect and work day-to-day with the contractor on site.

£40,476 to £43,693 plus £2163 Market Forces Supplement pro rata for hours worked

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • To be the lead officer for quality assurance carrying out a range of pre, post and work in progress inspections, providing feedback to the Project Manager
  • To manage a portfolio of minor works
  • To provide regular updates and reports to the Project Manager
  • Act as the first point of contact in resolving complaints received from residents, their representatives, members of the public, Councillors, MP, Housing Ombudsman etc.
  • Deputise for their line manager when he/she is unavailable.
  • Attend team meetings and briefings and any relevant training courses.

 

ABOUT YOU

The successful candidates will have:

  • Building construction knowledge.
  • Knowledge of the CDM regulations.
  • Knowledge of building and planning regulations.
  • Experience working in a similar role within a building construction or refurbishment environment.
  • A working knowledge of health and safety legislation and bring any shortfalls observed to the attention of the person(s) concerned, as well as the Project Manager.
  • An attention to detail and a focus on quality outputs.
  • Ability to manage conflict.
  • Experience of using SOR’s, Quotes and Tenders.
  • Experience of using IT systems.
  • A flexible approach and ability to work across teams as business needs change.

Clerks of Works and Quality Technical Inspector

Clerk of Works

As an experienced Clerk of Works and a member of the ICWCI, you should be able to demonstrate an ability in undertaking inspections of building works. Undertaking approximately 2 site visits per day, you’ll need to be confident in collaborating with Building Contractors to resolve any issues and preparing detailed reports for Employer’s Agents and Project Management.  The projects will be predominantly residential new build or refurbishment.

Quality Technical Inspector

Home-based (covering eastern Home Counties)

Salary – competitive

Experienced in Site Inspection and a member of the ICWCI / CIOB you’ll be working closely with Building Contractors, undertaking and evaluating construction works to ensure they meet quality and regulatory standards.

You’ll work closely with site teams to monitor and advise on quality management and identify areas of improvement. The work will involve undertaking regular inspections to monitor progress, verifying compliance with contractual drawings, warranty standards and employer’s requirements.

Additional qualification(s) in fire safety and/or experience in inspecting fire safety works / facades would be beneficial but isn’t essential. The projects will span all sections including, residential, blue light, education & health, commercial etc for new build and refurbishment projects.

To be successful in these roles you’ll need:

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of building construction
  • A good knowledge of the standard forms of construction contracts including JCT & NEC
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • The ability to produce high quality written reports and
  • Confidence in using Microsoft office and tablet-based inspection software

The Role

We are looking for a multi-skilled Clerk of Works to join our growing team based on site in London and the South East to monitor and report on quality at our live residential, commercial and education projects. The role involves inspecting and reporting on the quality of the works as the project progresses, ensuring compliance with contract documents, building regulations and home warranty provider requirements. You will be inspecting all elements of the build, inclusive of passive fire-stopping installations, façade construction and final finishes. The Transport & Development Team deliver many of the statutory transport and highway functions of the Council, which includes evolving transport proposals and relevant policies, as well as undertaking the highway development control function and approval of development-related highway works to ensure that planning applications deliver the necessary initiatives for a growing borough.

The team requires someone with experience who can inspect, measure, monitor and produce records of highway works related to new development on site, as well as investigating highway issues when required (including those involving the public rights of way network). A full driving licence and use of a car is vital to carry out this role, and an essential car user allowance will be payable. You will help cultivate good working relationships with key internal and many external partners, particularly to establish how required infrastructure will be secured.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with site-based experience of highway works who is interested in expanding their knowledge into the principles and procedures relating to highway matters. You will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team that, in addition to development-related activities and the formulation of transportation policies and projects, is responsible for many other functions including funding bids and legal processes covering stopping up orders, public rights of way and highway records.
