Associate Membership (Assoc. ICWCI)
What is an Associate Member of ICWCI?
An Associate grade of membership of any professional institute typically marks the mid-entry point into a particular profession, discipline, career or industry and is a non-corporate grade of The Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate.
The award of ‘Assoc.ICWCI’ provides a clear demonstration of a member’s commitment to their professional development and their aspiration to attain the highest level of competence through their progression to corporate member grade.
What criteria do I need to fulfil to be eligible for Associate membership?
To apply to become an Associate member, you must fulfil one of the following criteria:

Once you have completed your application and paid the entry fee, you will be asked to prepare and submit a report to demonstrate that you satisfy the level of construction practical experience required for Associate Grade.
The content of your report will demonstrate that you have been exposed to and dealt with a range of on-site construction learning experiences in line with a ‘Clerks of Works/Construction Inspection’ or allied role.

Your report will be written and submitted in a prepared template issued to you by ICWCI.

Your report must be in the written form and must provide observations from your work-based environment of a learning experience that relates to any two of the following areas:

- Your observations and your judgment of the situation or circumstances, such as lessons learnt and the potential for future developments or improvements.
- The examples you provided must have occurred within the past three years.
Applicants are encouraged to explore each of the areas 1 to 6 above, prior to selecting the two topics for the report.
What happens when I submit my report?
Upon receipt of your Associate Grade Report, the ICWCI membership team will submit your report to the Membership Hub for assessment in line with the criteria defined by the Institute.
If my report passes the assessment process, what happens then?
First and foremost, you will be officially notified of the outcome of the assessment.
If you have been successful, you will then be invited to accept this level of membership and to pay the relevant subscription.
Once this process is completed, you will then be entitled to use the post nominals
Assoc. ICWCI.
When an applicant achieves Assoc. ICWCI what is expected of them?
When an applicant is granted Assoc. ICWCI they are at that point accepting to abide by the Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics of the ICWCI as required by all members.
The Associate Grade of membership is considered by the ICWCI as a stepping stone to full ‘corporate membership’. As such the Institute expect Associates to aspire to and take specific actions to develop experiences towards achieving this goal within three to five years of achieving Associateship.
To assist Associates in this regard, the ICWCI will have systems and measures in place through an online platform where Associates may engage to aid their progression.
Further to the above, Associates members are expected to:
- Engage with ICWCI activities through the Chapter network.
- Undertake mandatory Continuing Professional Development, CPD.
- Continue to develop their experiences and competencies.
- Engage with the ICWCI ‘membership team’ to avail of progression opportunities.
- Aspire to achieve full ICWCI corporate membership through the ‘Competency Report’ route.
- Maintain a diary of their experiences that will assist towards their eventual competency report for full corporate membership, an online platform is currently in development to assist with this.
- Learn what it means to be a professional, and practice the principles of professionalism and professional behaviours.
- Abide by the rules, regulations and articles of association of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate.
